DRESSING FOR YOUR SHAPE : INVERTED PEAR

This time we are talking about the Upside-Down Pear (or the Inverted Triangle) shape.

If you fall into this category, your shape is generally larger on the top than it is at the bottom.
You'll either have broad shoulders or a large bust line, or both, with narrow hips and possibly
also a flat bottom. Women with this shape normally also have long slim legs.

Here are some photo's of Upside-Down Pear shaped celebrities:

Pamela Anderson

If this is your body shape, you can create the illusion of an hourglass figure by balancing your lower body to your upper body, and drawing attention away from your top half.

You should be wearing the following styles:
  • A-line skirts and flared pants - also add some detail in them, such as a bright pattern or print, pockets, ruffles - anything that draws the attention downwards. Go for lighter, brighter colours at the bottom and darker, plain colours on top.
  • When choosing jeans, go for a low-rise & slightly flared cut, with a lighter wash on the front and back thigh area. Also look for front or side pocket detail, this helps to add bulk around your hip area, creating more of an hourglass shape.
  • You need a good fitting bra - consider a professional fitting.
  • Tops and dresses that flow over and through the waist.
  • Three quarter length sleeves are best to downplay broad shoulders and extra bulk you might have in your upper arms.
  • Always wear tops with 'set-in' sleeves, meaning tailored cuts that fit under your armpit - stay away from loose fitting fabric under your arms, as this adds bulk.
  • Stick to low to medium-low necklines.
  • Flowing fabrics are best over stiff fitting fabrics.

Dress with ruffles at the bottom

Don't wear any of these styles:
  • Stiff bulk fabrics
  • Styles that emphasise your shoulders, such as boob tubes, halter necks, thin spaghetti straps, shoulder pads or detailing near your shoulders.
  • High necklines - this will make your bust line look bigger.
  • Big collars - this brings attentions upwards, which is the opposite of what you need.
  • Tapered pants and skirts - this includes leggings and skinny jeans, they make your narrow hips and slim legs look narrower.
  • Stay away from big statement necklaces and bright coloured scarves, anything that creates interest on your top half.

Have fun with trying new clothing options!
Shoes are a great way to bring attention downwards, so you will look great adding a pop of colour in your shoes. Look at these gorgeous bright heels from Aldo - they will all be stunning worn with a black dress or jeans. (You can maybe start by buying a cheaper pair first, to see how you like the trend. And always choose a colour that you love - don't buy shoes in a certain colour if your wardrobe will clash with that colour). Leopard print shoes also have the same effect.

The next 'Dressing for your Shape' article will be the Apple Shape (also refered to as the Diamond Shape).
Watch out for it next week.
