WARDROBE PLANNING GUIDE : PART 1

Having a well planned wardrobe will save you time getting dressed everyday, and save you money down the line, as you will always have something to wear to any occassion. There are no hard and fast rules, as everybody is different in personality and in lifestyle, therefore our choices will also be different.

These are some guidelines to help you to plan your own workable wardrobe:

The first thing you need to think of is colour. Start with the neutral options eg. black, brown, grey, beige and navy. Pick your two favourite neutral colours and buy your classic pieces in these colours. Purchase the best quality you can afford, as classic pieces won't go out of style and will serve you for many many years to come.
Start with one or two well fitted suits, these can be either pants or skirt suits - maybe one in each of the neutral colours you choose.

Black is an essential basic, so next will be a pair of black trousers. These can be worn to work and dressed up for the evening. A black pencil skirt does the same and is just as valuable in any wardrobe. Another must is the LBD (the little black dress) bought in a flattering style to suit your shape (the photo above of a wrap influenced black dress is the most flattering on almost all body types). Get one that can be both dressed up for a dinner date, with heels and jewellery, and also dressed down for an office meeting, worn with a blazer.
Another black 'must have' item is a pair of high heeled pumps (invest in a good comfortable pair) these will see you through many work days, meetings, dates, evening functions and more. Also consider high heeled black sandals and flat black walking shoes.

Get a good quality cardigan in one of your chosen neutral colours and another one in black. A well fitted blazer - consider getting black first, then another colour such as either beige or grey (although this might already be part of your suit that was mentioned earlier).
A well fitted, good quality white button up shirt can be worn with almost anything - consider even getting two in slightly different styles, and also get a black one.

The perfect fitting jeans might seem impossible to find, but putting aside the time to shop for them is time & money well spent. Even if the perfect fit carries a price tag of well over R1000 a pair, think of the amount of times that you will wear them in one year - the 'cost per wear' will be worth it. Denim also lasts for years and washes very well, so you could be wearing them for several years to come if you choose a flattering fit, and not a fashionable fit. When you find the perfect pair, consider getting a medium blue as well as a darker blue, and even a black pair as well.

Next is ballet flats, best to try find either bronze or grey ones as these look good with jeans and with most other colours for a more casual weekend look. Every woman needs an all occassion handbag, and the most versatile is a medium sized one in either black or in your most worn neutral colour.
